Astrological Trends for December 20-26

Cross-posted from Aloha Astro

Intense energy builds on Monday, December 20th, as the moon in Gemini approaches fullness and a total lunar eclipse early in the morning hours of the 21st. The mutable air sign of Gemini rules mental creativity, teaching, and learning. It is curious, playful, restless, fickle, and easily bored. I feel that the full moon and eclipse will show you areas of your life where you have been immature or not paying attention closely enough. In the evening, the moon opposes Mercury retrograde in Sagittarius conjunct the sun in Sagittarius while activating a T-square of moon opposing sun in Sagittarius, moon square Jupiter/Uranus in Pisces, and the sun/Mercury square Jupiter/Uranus in Pisces. Another characteristic of both Gemini and Sagittarius is the tendency to spin yarns or tell stories – in other words, lie. Pisces can do the same, but more through a casting of impressions or by alluding to things rather than using direct speech. It is rare for the mutable signs to lie deliberately with the intent to harm or mislead. It is their mutable, changeable, adaptable quality that leads them to shift their own energy to any given situation the way a chameleon changes colors to blend into the surroundings. It is a good defensive trait. They are all signs that love to be social, please people, and be liked in return. If that means embellishing the facts or telling a tall tale for entertainment value or to give an impression to get what they want, they will do so without a second thought. The mutable signs, in general, see the gray areas of life much more easily than the cardinal and fixed signs that see only the black and white. This full moon/eclipse/T-square pattern will ask you to look at the gray areas of your life. Where have you been too vague, misleading, evasive, or deceptive to yourself and others? Consider it a planetary game of Truth or Dare meets Show and Tell.

On the morning of Monday, December 20th, a trine between the moon in Gemini and Saturn in Libra enhanced by a semi-sextile between Saturn in Libra and Venus in Scorpio fully supports the exposure of secrets and uncovering of truth as well as communication in relationships. The sun and Mercury in Sagittarius encourage reaching for higher ideals and correcting irresponsible, cavalier behavior by making a sextile to Neptune/Chiron in Aquarius. The attitude that things you say or do affect no one but yourself must be changed now. Everything you say and do actually affects everyone because everything is energetically connected in this Universe. Resistance to change, however, is caused by the moon in Gemini square to Jupiter/Uranus in Pisces later this afternoon. You know what you need to do, but oh, it feels like too much work! Thankfully, a beneficial trine between the moon and Neptune/Chiron in Aquarius helps settle anxiety and agitated emotions. Venus parallel Neptune also adds softness, kindness, and love to the overall energy of the day. Think of these aspects as planetary tranquilizers and painkillers. Their energy can help you extract any mucky yuck that comes up during this time period with less trauma or painful after-effect. Just like childbirth is a process made less painful by the thought of the baby to come, so, too, this full moon speaks of anxiety producing changes in life, which can move us toward a desired future. When we get to where we are going, we will forget the anxiety and difficulty in the delight of having arrived. It is time to come of age in some area of life – to mature and grow without losing the qualities of imagination and idealism.

The intensity of the eclipse and full moon begins to ease on Tuesday, December 21st. An opposition between the moon in Cancer and Mars in Capricorn indicates that our emotions may be scraped raw and tears could be close to the surface. The masculine planet of Mars in stoic Capricorn may make you feel you should repress those emotions, endure discomfort, and hold back any tears, but that is not the best thing to do. As the afternoon progresses, the Cancer moon also activates Pluto, making your emotions behave like lava ready to bubble over. If you have been repressing them, they are likely to flow as outbursts of anger. Deep breathing and patience help you navigate your day. This is a good time to remember the Golden Rule when people get in your face or situations seem overly dramatic. The other person is feeling the same energy you are now, so treat them as you would wish to be treated. This evening, the sun moves from the fire sign of Sagittarius to the earth sign of Capricorn as winter begins. Write the things you want to let go of on a piece of paper and release their energy by burning the paper. Plant some seeds or a bulb in a pot of soil while thinking of the intentions you will nurture in the days ahead as the light increases and the dark retreats. Happy Winter Solstice!

Contradictory energy is in place on Wednesday, December 22nd, when the moon in Cancer favorably trines Venus in Scorpio while also squaring Saturn in Libra. The former supports enjoyment of physical intimacy and sensuality, but the latter makes for some restriction or disappointment emotionally in relationships. Maybe the grass looked greener on the other side of the fence, but now that you jumped the fence, you’ve discovered it’s the same old grass? Or perhaps you would like to focus on the commitment aspect of relationship, but the desire for the physical part of relating means you will compromise on your own rules and restrictions in the pursuit of love. Mercury contra-parallel the moon eases communication and increases understanding and sympathy. The moon in Cancer quincunx Mercury in Sagittarius retrograde indicates you may be revisiting emotions or situations from the past to understand how they are affecting you now. With Mercury sextile Neptune in Aquarius and still square to Jupiter/Uranus in Pisces, be especially cautious in long-distance travel by air or sea. Later this evening, when the moon also forms a quincunx to Neptune and a trine to Jupiter/Uranus, be a landlubber, if possible. Even better – stay home. They are generally supportive aspects, yet they are connected with the elements of water and air and activate the square to retrograde Mercury, increasing the possibility for mishaps when traveling by air or water. Use the energy in other ways, such as nesting and cuddling at home with your partner. Cancer does rule nurturing and the fourth house of home, so be in alignment with the moon for the most ease.

Just as the moon leaves Cancer early in the morning on Thursday, December 23rd, it forms a quincunx to the sun in Capricorn and a quincunx to Neptune/Chiron in Aquarius. There is emotional healing energy contained in these aspects, yet an inability to see it or know how to begin to make it happen. Trust that it is present and accept it, whether you can see or feel anything or not. As the morning progresses, the moon enters the fire sign of Leo and continues its intense and dramatic quincunx energy pattern with the sun and Pluto conjunct in Capricorn. I hear the words “coming on strong,” “putting up a good front,” and “making the best of it.” Leo is the consummate actor, delighting in a costume and a role to play. You may not feel totally settled and synthesized on the inside yet, but you are determined to move through your day with enough bravado and bluster to fool them all.

Some holiday tension shows up early on Friday, December 24th, as the moon in the fire sign of Leo makes a challenging square to Venus in the water sign of Scorpio. Family drama, heightened emotions, snubbing, and some stubborn arguments are possible. A quincunx between the moon in Leo and Mars in Capricorn leads me to think that some tension is brewing between generations. Whenever families with children, adult children, and grandparents gather, the generation gap becomes more apparent, with the younger crowd bucking against authority and tradition and the elders almost guaranteed to say, “When I was your age…” as they launch into a lecture. It’s a good thing that the moon makes a gentle sextile to Saturn in Libra, encouraging politeness, respect, and social conformity. Come dinner time, the moon in warmhearted Leo is trine Mercury in jovial Sagittarius and holiday spirits are lit like the candles at the dinner table. Everyone settles into the spirit of jolly fa-la-la. No one minds hearing the same jokes and stories that were told around the table last year. The square that was in place for the last few weeks between Mercury and Jupiter/Uranus has dissolved and things feel distinctly lighter and more hopeful. Additionally, travel is less stressful with that square to Mercury retrograde easing. The anticipation of moving ahead into a new year is felt now.

An early start to the day is guaranteed on Saturday, December 25th, in homes with children celebrating Christmas this year. The moon is in late Leo opposing Neptune/Chiron in Aquarius. With the moon in wild Leo, the kids will want to be up playing with new toys, but Neptune will make the parents wish to linger in bed. Expect to hear some squabbles over sharing and what belongs to whom when the toys are unwrapped because Leo/Aquarius opposition can trigger boundary wars. The moon quincunx Jupiter/Uranus in Pisces can make today stand out in your memory in the years to come as a Christmas where everything seemed bigger, brighter, and happier than usual. By lunch time, the moon has entered the more civilized sign of Virgo trine the sun conjunct Pluto in Capricorn. The remainder of your day may be spent delivering gifts or receiving company. The lovely trine facilitates taking care of chores, attending to details, and completing tasks. A new energy pattern forms today, which will be in place for a week: Mars in Capricorn will square Saturn in Libra. This energy solidifies commitments in relationships, but can also make promises and commitments feel like work or a restrictive burden. The sobering influence of realizing more work might be required to pay for the delights of the holiday could be another manifestation of this square, which places your attention on method and structure for a week. It is also a fitting influence for choosing a New Year’s resolution you can uphold.

Sunday, December 26th, delivers a day full of variety. The day begins with the moon in practical Virgo forming a supportive trine to disciplined Mars in Capricorn. You will have the desire and energy to clean and organize and get life back to normal after the holiday. Next, a whole row of semi-sextiles pops up like stepping stones across a creek. The moon in Virgo semi-sextile Saturn in Libra, hop, Saturn semi-sextile Venus in Scorpio, hop, Venus semi-sextile Mercury in Sagittarius. So, what does that mean? They are not major aspects, yet I think you will feel them strongly because of the linkages from planet to planet. Most likely, you will be restless, energized, affectionate, and social. It’s the perfect time to go from house to house visiting friends for a quick drop-in. Don’t linger too long on any one task or in any one place or you will become impatient. Standing on line to return gifts would not be a wise choice, but shopping for holiday markdowns, where you flit from store to store, is a good use of this energy. The practical influence of the Virgo moon will keep spending in check and you will find your purchases pleasing and useful. In the early afternoon, the moon in Virgo enters a challenging square to Mercury in Sagittarius. This is an impatient energy that can affect driving and moods. Emotionally, people are inclined to be sassy or persnickety. Later this afternoon, the moon in Virgo forms a sultry sextile to Venus in Scorpio, enhancing your ability to plan a seduction or manipulate someone to fulfill your desires – naughty, but nice. This evening, the moon parallel Uranus and Mercury parallel Pluto can bring something unexpected that rocks your emotional world. You could meet someone new or have someone tell you something so surprising that your mind is transformed by the exchange.
